What to Eat at the State Fair of Texas 2018
I know the State Fair of Texas gives out awards. They have even varied the options by breaking it up into Sweet, Savory, and Most Creative. I’m sure lots of thought and eating went into deciding who each award goes to, I’m just not always convinced they are right. For example this years Most Creative award goes to a cotton candy taco.
1. This doesn’t sound very appealing.
2. I really thought Kool-Aid® Pickle-Dilly Sangria had this one in the bag
So, instead of just going and eating what the judges have deemed worthy. I’ve put together a guide of what new foods I am most anticipating at the 2018 State Fair of Texas.
FLETCHER’S CHEEZY PUP
It’s not the state fair without a Fletchers corn dog. This year they are mixing it up by introducing the Cheese Pup. This is like if a mozzarella stick and a corn dog had a baby. Crispy corn dog on the outside and gooey melted cheese on the inside. I’ll definitely be in line for this
TEXAS THAI DELIGHT
Fried sticky rice sound like a texture that am going to love. If that “house sweet sauce” has condensed milk in it I will actually be in heaven.
SUPRA STUFFED MINI SOPAPILLAS
The fried cheesecake is on my top list of foods everyone should eat at the state fair. These sopapillas stuffed with strawberry cream cheese sound like they are going to give the fried cheese cake a run for it’s money.
FRIED CUP OF CORN “ELOTES”
This is possibly the best idea ever. All the goodness of elotes packed into a little fried ball. Similar to the Thai Delight, this is a texture I am really going to enjoy. More lumpy food please.
Fernie’s Hoppin’ John Cake with Jackpot Sauce
The judges don’t get it all wrong. Fernie’s pumps out winners every year so I can’t say I am surprised they are the winner of this years Savory award. Fernie can do no wrong.
Arroz con Leche (Sweet Crispy Rice)
The judges are coming in strong again with another great option. The state fair is really after my heart this year with the texture of these foods. The only other thing they could win me over with would be a fried tapioca pudding.
DEEP FRIED SHEPHERD’S PIE
It’s really hard to go wrong with a potato ball of meat. Of all the fried potato options you’ll find at the fair this is by far the one I am most excited for.
With a name like Twang-kie how is anyone going to pass this up? Not to mention it is a cornbread shell filled with white chicken bean chili. We will have the debate about beans and chili later, for now just eat.
FERNIE’S ORANGE YOU GLAD WE FRIED IT?!
Why yes Fernie I am glad you fried it, thank you for asking. FERNIE CAN DO NO WRONG. So here we are again with Fernie’s second entry and another semi-finialist. It is a fried Orange hand pie. I am waiting for the year when this entire list is just Fernie new creations back to back.
