10 New Foods At The Texas State Fair That Will Blow Your Mind
It's the most wonderful time of the year! The State Fair of Texas has arrived (opening September 29th) and with it a new batch of mind blowing foods. This year saw 47 entries to be named among the best of the new foods. Out of the forty-seven , thirty were narrowed down to be semi-finalists. Judges evaluated the entries on uniqueness, creativity, taste, and presentation. Here are some of the top contenders you won't want to miss.
Deep Fried Chicken Noodle Soup on a Stick
Eating food on a stick at the state fair is part of every fair goers experience, but soup on a stick sounds like it down right defies the laws of physics. This years Fried Chicken Noodle Soup on a Stick gets around this by leaving an indention in each of the fried balls for the broth to be poured into.
Deep Fried Froot Loops®
Fruit Loops are already basically dessert for breakfast and this State Fair twist just makes it even better. The cereal is mixed into a whipped marshmallow batter, fried in a creamy batter, and finally topped with a glaze and powdered sugar.
Also a name that I respond to, this dish brings the sweetness of New Orleans to the State Fair of Texas. It starts with three belgium cream puffs that are dipped in Cafe Du Monde beignet batter and fried. It could stop there and be amazing, but then it is topped with powdered sugar, chocolate AND caramel sauce.
Funnel Cake Bacon Queso Burger
A glorious juicy burger is topped with crispy bacon and melty queso, to only then be sandwiched between two funnel cakes. It's no surprise this new food took home the prize for most creative and best taste- savory. Did I mention it comes with a side of even more queso? We are not worthy.
Fernie’s Fried Texas Sheet Cake
A State Fair twist on a Texas Classic. This dessert starts with a Texas sized fudge brownie that is then in a fried coat of cocopuffs, panko, and cinnamon sugar. This Texas sized dessert doesn't stop there. To finish things off it is drizzled with Dr. Pepper icing, chopped pecans, and whipped cream.
Gulf Coast Fish Bowl
I'd pick this drink over a trip to the gulf coast any day. This sea of sweetness is the 2017 winner for Best Taste- Sweet. It is made up of a gravel base of Nerds candy, a blue alcoholic punch, Swedish fish, and a pineapple lid. If the Gulf of Mexico was filled with alcohol I might be tempted to visit it more often.
Pinot Noir Popcorn
It's like a wine and cheese pairing on the go. This Santa Monica Kettle Corn is dusted with pinot noir wine powder and paired with cheese flavors. This is a great snack for waiting in line of sitting at the top of the Texas Star.
Surfin’ Turfin’ Tator Boat
The State Fair does a steak and lobster dinner! Marinated lobster and grilled steak are combined to into baked potato goodness and topped with cheddar and romano cheeses. No baked potato is complete without butter. this one comes topped with melted roasted garlic butter an a side of lemon butter for dipping.
The Tamale Donut
The ultimate food love child has been born. We can all rejoice! Made-from scratch masa is filled with mouth-watering carnitas and shaped into a donut, iced with a creamy jalapeno salsa.
Texas Fajita Fries
Fried fajita strips are tossed in a Siracha seasoning and placed in a bread cone. It doesn't end there though. To reach it's fried pinnacle, the cone is then served on a bed of Texas Toothpicks (fried onions and jalapenos).
